YA "Rock Art" Sculpture

YA "Rock Art" Sculpture

Saturday, August 5, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., Ruch Branch Library, 7919 Highway 238.

Young adults at libraries across Jackson County are creating colorful sculptures inspired by large-scale public artwork designed by the Internationally renowned Swiss artist, Ugo Rondinone.

Rondinone’s installation, Seven Magic Mountains, is comprised of towers of colorful, stacked boulders standing more than thirty feet high in the desert near Las Vegas, Nevada. Born 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland, Rondinone works with a wide range of forms and media. His art often focuses on the relationship between human beings and nature.

The Young Adult (YA) “Rock Art” Sculpture program is the brainchild of Lori Wilson, a Library Associate with Jackson County Library Services (JCLS). “I am drawn to outdoor art because it is exposed to the world, which in turn creates collective action,” said Wilson. She also teaches the free program, which is sponsored by the Kenneth A. and Lucille D. Hulburt Family Trust. Youth ages 12-18 select five to seven rocks, just the right size and shape to stack and balance, then paint them with acrylics, including glow-in-the-dark paint for a magical nighttime effect. The miniature sculptures can be placed in a garden, along a pathway, on a deck, or to mark a sacred place where a beloved pet has been laid to slumber.
