Constructing Crosswords: An Introduction, 18+ YRS

Constructing Crosswords: An Introduction, 18+ YRS

Have you always wanted to make your own crossword puzzle? Or just been curious about what it takes? This presentation may help you become a better solver by surveying the overall process and underlying techniques of crossword construction – whether or not you plan to become a constructor yourself.

Construction tips will cover both free-form and US newspaper-style, symmetric puzzles. It’ll get into the nitty-gritty and answer your questions on topics like:

  • preparation (conventions, tools)
  • brainstorming and placing theme entries
  • arranging grid blocks
  • how to fill in other words
  • crafting interesting clues
  • how to submit for publication -- or just distribute to your friends

Instructor Steve Weyer has been a "cruciverbalist" (crossword aficionado) since the 1990s. He developed CrozzWord, a Java-based crossword solving application, in 2002. Since 2010, he's been solving puzzles on his iPad, teaching crossword courses at OLLI, and constructing crosswords for family, friends and local organizations. His first New York Times crossword is scheduled to debut in 2023.
