Rogue Reads Author Talk: Julia Alvarez Discussses Afterlife , 18+ YRS Online

Join author Julia Alvarez in a virtual talk about her novel and Rogue Reads 2023-2024 selection, Afterlife.

Born in New York City in 1950, Julia Alvarez's parents returned to their native country, Dominican Republic, shortly after her birth. Ten years later, the family was forced to flee to the United States because of her father’s involvement in a plot to overthrow the dictator, Trujillo.

Alvarez has written novels, nonfiction, and books for young readers; many of which explore themes of migration, birth, death, and memory. Her awards include the Pura Belpré and Américas Awards for her books for young readers, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.

About Rogue Reads

Rogue Reads encourages everyone in Jackson County to read and discuss the same books. This three-month program takes place December through February and features discussions and programs featuring our spotlight author, Julia Alvarez and the 2023-24 theme: Immigrant Experiences.

Join the Rogue Reads Challenge on Beanstack, then read and discuss this year's titles: Afterlife (adults), Finding Miracles (teens), Return to Sender (tweens), and Already a Butterfly (children and families). Beanstack participants track their reading to earn badges and chances to win fun prizes. Look for more exciting Rogue Reads programs at jcls.org/roguereads
