Dixie of the Pacific Northwest: Southern Oregon During the Civil War

Dixie of the Pacific Northwest: Southern Oregon During the Civil War

Jeff Lalande discusses the intense hostility and occasional threats of violence between those in our region who supported the North and those who were sympathetic to the South.

Image: Members of the "Ashland Mountain Rangers," a volunteer non-official "home-guard" group of local men during the Civil War. Members were staunch pro-Union men; they trained, drilled, and were ready to help official US Army volunteer detachments in case of civil unrest by the numerous Southern sympathizers in the Rogue Valley. They are posed in front of the Ashland House, a travelers' inn and community meeting place that sat approximately where the Plaza is today.
