Windows in Time Presents "Cameras, Compass, Castle and Vines: The Legacy of Peter Britt"

Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society, Stephanie Butler, will present the lecture “Compass, Camera, Castle and Vine: The Legacy of Peter Britt”.

The story of Peter Britt and his life as a pioneer photographer and entrepreneur in southern Oregon is widely known, but when we consider the impact of his personal legacy we discover that it encompasses the influence of the generations that preceded him as well as that of his children who carried on after his death in the early 1900s. This engaging program will widen the lens through which we view Britt’s personal story, his cultural and social ancestry, and how the choices he made illuminate his more private nature and actions. Take a fresh look at the man behind the camera, his meticulous accounting of the world around him, and how his creative work ethic redefines the meaning of human legacy.

Stephanie Butler is the Assistant Director of Pre-College Programs for Southern Oregon University’s Division of Outreach and Engagement. She is also the Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society, overseeing professional preservation standards for the Society’s extensive collection of artifacts in the historic C. C. Beekman House, the Beekman Bank, Hanley Farm and a temperature controlled warehouse holding artifacts that reflect the history of southern Oregonians from pre-history to the present. She has been a contributing writer for Southern Oregon Heritage Today, a publication of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and for Jefferson Public Radio's As it Was broadcast and a presenter of several Windows in Time lectures.

The monthly “Windows in Time” lunchtime lectures are offered free to the public from 12 noon–1:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Medford Library and the second Wednesday of each month at the Ashland Library.  These lectures feature well-known writers and historians, and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our Southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services.
