ONLINE PROGRAM: Constructing Crosswords

ONLINE PROGRAM: Constructing Crosswords Online

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes for designing and publishing a crossword puzzle?

During the 3-part Constructing Crosswords course, we will:

  • Become familiar with crossword conventions, formats, tools
  • Learn where to place theme entries and arrange grid blocks (black squares)
  • Find out how to fill-in other words, craft imaginative clues and submit a puzzle for publication.

The course will focus on US newspaper-style, symmetric, themed 15 x 15 puzzles, like those in the New York Times (NYT). This program series will be held on the following Mondays: July 13, July 20, and July 27. Participants only need to register once for the series. Registration is welcome after the series has begun.

Steve Weyer has solved crosswords puzzles for several decades, developed and distributed the "CrozzWord" application, and constructed crosswords for fun (hoping to be published someday). KSKQ-FM interviewed Steve about Crosswords in music in 2011. He has taught several courses at OLLI about crosswords, passwords, and internet privacy and security. Steve's contributions to library science include an information retrieval system for a research library in the 1970s, and research papers about hypertext systems, ebooks and search technologies.
