ONLINE PROGRAM: Windows In Time Presents "History of Bear Creek: From Salmon Stream to Open Sewer and Back Again" Online
Please note, this event will take place remotely via Zoom. Zoom meeting details will be emailed to you when you register.
Popular historian and lecturer Jeff LaLande will share historic photographs and information about Bear Creek from Native times to the present.
Bear Creek's water was used for domestic water supply, powering a saw mill, and for irrigating crops. By the early twentieth century, both Bear Creek's water quality and its water quantity had declined greatly. The creek's periodic destructive floods caused huge losses of property and farmland. The creek also became a convenient dumping place for all manner of things, including household garbage, dead animals, and industrial waste. In recent years, a concerted effort has helped bring Bear Creek back towards its natural condition and flow patterns.
The monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians, and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our Southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services.
